To Procrastinate or Not - What to do when I just don't want to do!
|

It’s really gotten out of hand. My basement. I only really visit it to
do laundry or to work out on my treadmill or universal, however
nearly every other inch of the place is filled with storage. You
know, those projects I will start one day, the cross-country skis I
bought and never used, oh and the books. I cannot seem to throw
anything away. I do not even want to think about what my home
will look at when I am 40, 50 or 60 at this rate. I am out of control.
I only know one great source for a let us get this done attitude is my
sister. I have many times questioned her relation to our family.
There is no waiting around in her existence. Just get it done.
So sis, how do I just get it done? Her response to me is I have the
wrong attitude. She claims that you cant look at a project
thinking, “I have to get this done.” She says to think of it as, “I
want to get this done because.” Then she actually gave me a
writing project of listing all the reasons why I want to get my
basement cleaned out. I started out with the obvious, finding
things, keeping mice out, more space. Then that is when the juices
started flowing. I thought of things I could do with that space if it
was cleared out. I thought of finishing and making a game room
with a pool table, creating cool storage cabinets or just an extra
area for guest where we can watch movies on big chairs and a
couch with surround sound.
Well now, I cannot wait to get this space cleared out. That little
task or change in attitude has now motivated me. She then told
me do not think of getting this done in one afternoon. Honestly, I
was thinking eight hours a day for a week is what it would take.
She said think of tasks that you can do in thirty-minute
increments. I started with collecting boxes, and labeling them.
My next 30-minute project was renting a dolly, removing the old
washer, stove there, and put on the tree lawn. I then started
sorting things and in 30 minutes every day for 2 months the
basement was cleaned out and I am now ready to hire contractors
to redesign my new game room.
Therefore, if you have a problem with procrastination like the one I
do, just think, you do not have to do anything you do not want to,
no matter the consequences. Figure out the positive aspects of
accomplishing your task. That way your mind does not fight you
for this accomplishment. Do not, expect perfection just keep at it.
Not every job will be done perfectly, just to the best of your ability
because you are only human. Being a better you, starts inside of
you!
